Israel’s Central Elections Committee in cooperation with the Transportation Ministry has announced that they will offer free inter-city public transportation on election day across the country. The move is aimed at getting more voters who live in different cities than where they are registered to still vote, and includes both busses and trains. The free fares will begin at 8:00 p.m. the day before elections on April 8th and continue throughout the entire day of the elections.
Travelers using busses will not be asked to swipe a card or for payment, whereas those using trains will be given a free ticket to the destination of their choice at the service counters in the stations. Those who need to get to or from Eilat will be given an Egged Bus voucher at the Egged service counters in bus stations. They will need to register for the cards in advance.
The Central Elections Committee will be footing the bill for all of the free transportation provided that day. The hope of the Committee is that the move will assist voters who live a great distance from their polling stations to still come out and perform their civic right and duty of voting.
