Elite IDF Air Force Combatants Forget Classified Laptop in Gas Station Coffee Shop

Combatants from the elite IDF Air Force’s Shaldag unit forgot a classified computer at a gas station. A bus driver found the computer, understood its importance and immediately turned it into the police, Yossi Yehoshua of Yediot Achronot reported on Thursday morning, March 21, 2019.

The serious incident occurred at the end of an operational activity from which the classified unit’s fighters were heading back to their base.

As they made their way to the Palmachim Air Force Base in southern Israel reports Yossi Yehoshua, the team of the soldiers stopped for a refreshment at a gas station coffee shop. One of the fighters was responsible with watching the laptop containing sensitive and classified material. They sat in the coffee shop but when they returned to their vehicle, they forgot the computer. A bus driver who passed by, found the laptop and brought it to the police immediately, realizing it was special in nature. Police contacted military police and it was learned the computer is assigned to Shaldag.

The computer was immediately handed over to the military’s experts towards determining if it was opened and if any information was compromised. It was learned that nothing was compromised, so a potentially serious event ended as well as possible.

Military police launched an investigation and the soldier’s commander, Lt.-Colonel ‘T’ docked the five soldiers.

The Shaldag unit is a highly classified unit and is subordinate to the Commander of the Special Forces in the Air Force. It was established 43 years ago, and in recent years, the unit has carried out hundreds of special operations to thwart the arming of Hezbollah and Hamas terrorist organizations. Little is known about the unit, which reportedly operates outside the borders of the State of Israel.
