The Military Court of Appeals ruled on Sunday that draft dodger Meir Blau will sit for four months in open open detention in a military prison for four months, until the end of the legal case against him is sorted through.
Blau, a resident of Modi’in Illit, protested together with others last week against the IDF’s enlistment of women.
Following his attempt to physically close a major roadway with his own person, Blau was arrested by civilian police. The police brought him to military police after it was discovered that he himself was a draft dodger.
Blua’s attorney, Menachem Stauber, succeeded at getting Blau released for Shabbos until the ruling in his appeal could be finalized. Stauber got special compensation for Blau as the latter is the father of a four-month-old-child.
According to the ruling that was handed down on Sunday night, Blau will remain in detention for the next four months, until the proceedings against him are concluded. However, he will be able to be in civilian clothing and on the base of Prison 4 without having to be in the prison itself at all times.
The open detention also allows Blau Badatz supervised food and an unlimited amount of phone calls.
A member of the Peleg Yerushalmi faction, to which Blau belongs said that this was a judicial precedent that is interesting. “This precedent is an interesting legal one. It allows us to request these conditions in the future for Yeshiva students as an alternative to full prison conditions.”
