The Labor party in Israel began to run a public transportation bus last Shabbos in Tiveria. This was done as part of the party’s election campaigning in order to encourage left-wing or secular voters to vote for the party that has been sinking dramatically in the polls following the rise of Benny Gantz’s “Hosen L’Yisrael” party. The Labor party supports public transportation being open across the country on Shabbos.
The next stop for the bus will be Yerushalayim.
Following Shas’s injunction with the High Court of Justice to prevent free busses being offered on Shabbos, the Labor party told the High Court that they would agree to no longer run the busses.
However, in spite of their seeming acquiescence in court, the Labor party decided to instead to get tricky. They announced that on the bus, which will run in Jerusalem, it will not be a public transport bus, but rather a campaign bus on which only supporters of the Lab party will be allowed on board. The “campaign bus” will accompany another bus that will travel the streets of Yerushalayim instead of using their bus to transport passengers.
The busses are expected to travel the streets of the capital this coming Shabbos.
