Secular activists determined to break the chareidi boycott of Shefa Shuk will be heading to Bnei Brak this erev Shabbos towards achieving their goal. Small numbers of non-religious shoppers have reportedly made their way to Bnei Brak during the week, opting to shop at the city’s Shefa Shuk market instead of their local supermarket – all towards ending what they call “attempts at religious coercion”.
Friday’s shopping group is not expected to be too large, perhaps just symbolic, but the shoppers are indeed committed to showing store-owners that the non-religious community will compensate for the loss of chareidi clientele – urging store owners not to acquiesce to “religious coercion” and operate AM:PM stores on Shabbos, as has been the case to date.
Store employees in Bnei Brak tell another story, that they have little to do just a week before Pesach since the frum community is keeping its distance from the store.
AM:PM, Blue Square Co-Op and Shefa Shuk are all owned by the Alon Group, under the direction of Chairman David Wiessman, who is at the center of the controversy.

its a joke, the secular can never make up in sales for the lost charedi business. what a bunch if fools! I guarentee Alon will wake up sooner or later and close AM:PM on shabbos, or else shefa shuk will have too close down
To the management of Shefa Shuk that wants to be open on Shabbos: Surprise! Eretz Yisroel is a Jewish country.
YWN STATED AT THE BEGINNING OF THE WEEK THAT THE LITVISHER GEDOLIM LET TO BUY AT SHEFA SHUK SO THE MUST BE BUSINESS FOR THEM
czelasko-
SUPRISE EY is unfortunately not a Jewish country. It’s a democracy. Let them create “blue laws” with teeth. Until then you can’t stop teh stores from being open
oy vey…..when will they ever learn…it’s funny how no one ever talks about chiloni coercion !
What’s the big deal? More than 20% of Israel’s population isn’t Jewish–who cares if they shop on Shabbat?
” EY is unfortunately not a Jewish country. It’s a democracy”
open up a Chumash, your statement is ridiculous.
the fact that E.Y. is currently (and fleetingly) being occupied by an atheistic democratic leadership does not make the Holy land of Israel any more of a democracy, than it was a monarchy under the romans, or a dictatorship under the babylonians
Eretz Yisroel belongs to HKB”H and the people that love Him and do His Will
Israel is actually neither a democracy nor a Jewish State. It is a Zionist state, with all rights and privileges granted therein, that has a bit of Judaism and some democratic elements as well.
