Sirens sounded in Ashkelon shortly after 3:00AM Monday morning, January 7, 2019, signaling renewed rocket fire from Gaza. The Iron Dome rocket intercept system responded to a single rocket that was fired.
At around 6:00AM, Gaza news agencies reported the IAF was carrying out an attack against a Hamas military installation in Northern Gaza.
The IDF Spokesman’s Office confirmed one rocket launch was detected from Gaza, heading towards Ashkelon. The report added that both fighter planes and attack helicopters took part in the retaliatory strike, adding the IDF holds Hamas responsible for all cross-border rocket fire into Israel.
Earlier in the night, attack choppers targeted a Hamas objective in retaliation for the explosive device sent over the border using balloons on Sunday.
After agreeing to the last ceasefire with Hamas, in November 2018, Israel announced it would maintain a zero-tolerance policy to any and all attacks over the border from Gaza.
In response to the rocket fired at Israel from Gaza, IDF fighter jets and a helicopter targeted a number of terror targets within Hamas’s military camp in northern Gaza.
