CHAREIDI PARTIES UNITE? Shas, Degel & Agudah Reportedly Running As One Party in Upcoming Elections

In an exclusive report by Mishpacha Magazine in Israel, it is being announced that the three Chareidi parties – Degel Hatorah, Agudah Yisroel, and Shas – will be running as one party in the upcoming general elections.

The report says this has been endorsed by the Gadol Hador, Hagaon Harav Chaim Kanievsky Shlita.

The news was broken at about the same time both by Shimon Breitkof of Mishpacha magazine in Israel, on his Twitter account – tweeting an image of the cover of the magazine.

Moments later, Israeli journalist Yair Sharki of Channel two tweeted “First report: An initiative for a joint campaign by Shas, Agudas Yisroel and Degel HaTorah on one list. HaRav Chaim Kanievsky, one of the leading Rabbonim supports the move”.

The renewed effort to unite the parties, a plan that has been tossed around for the past year almost, was rekindled following the split of the right-wing Bayit Yehudi party and the threat that the parties of Tzipi Livni, Yair Lapid and Benny Gantz would become stronger and bring about an anti-Charedi government.

However, there are still things that need to be sorted out before the unification actually comes to pass. A source told YWN that Shas has not fully committed to the plan as of yet, due to fears that the party will be viewed as very Chariedi, thus possibly alienating some of the irreligious Sephardic voters who always vote for Shas.

  1. They’d be stupid to do this. Shas will be even weaker than now.
Alternatively this is Deri’s way of making sure Yachad doesn’t join.

  2. wow. even agudah and degel cheated when they had to share an odd seat. adding deri will make genaivah an explicit part of the platform.
