Israel Police Traffic Enforcement Division is prepared for New Year’s Eve 2019.
Over the past year there has been a significant increase in the enforcement of the driving offense by police officers against DWI, driving while intoxicated. In 2017, 5,993 motorists were caught driving under the influence of alcohol, compared with 2018, in which 6,786 drivers were caught.
On New Year’s Eve of 2016, 89 drunk drivers were apprehended as compared to New Year’s Eve 2017 with 59 and in 2018, there were 58.
Hundreds of police officers are assigned to New Year’s Eve duty, to be stationed near recreational areas as well as on interurban routes. Breath tests will be issued to drivers at random checkpoints as well.
Police cite that unfortunately, too many still drink and drive, placing themselves and others at risk. Police explain the message is a simple one, and that is if one drinks, one does not drive.
Police add there will be zero tolerance to the use of drugs and/or alcohol and anyone apprehended will face the maximum penalty under law.
