Jerusalem Court Leaves Kadima in a Quandary

chometz1.jpgLast week’s decision by a Jerusalem Municipal Court justice regarding the Chametz Law [reported HERE on YWN] has created a most uneasy situation for Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and his Kadima Party.

Kadima faction members are not seeking to entertain a chareidi agenda at present, but they are also aware if they ignore the landmark ruling, permitting the sale of chametz on Pesach in Jerusalem, a coalition crisis with Shas will rapidly unfold.

For today, it appears Kadima is not calling a special session to address the chametz issue, but party members are aware that the matter will not disappear on its own.

Shas leader Minister Eli Yishai is already busy drafting a bill that will render the court decision inconsequential, vowing to change the new reality created by the court’s decision, which was a gross violation of the long-standing religious status-quo in the capital.

  1. The law prohibiting smoking is also only in public places. One way to test the nature of this ruling would be to see if it is now permitted to smoke in restaurants and grocery stores. What about other activities that are illegal in public places?

  2. I never understood the Hava Amina of the Chareidim who wish to force feed Yiddishkeit to the Chilonim.

L’aniyas Daati, nothing positive can come from forcing our way of life on the Tinokos Shenishbu of Eretz Yisroel & Yerushalayim.

Shouldn’t we rather focus our energies on Kiruv Rechokim so that in the future B’ezras H-shem they will not eat Chometz by choice?

Besides we are still in Galus today even in Eretz Yisroel.

I know the Chazon Ish ZTVK”L negotiated with, L’havdil the Rosho BG for the State to keep certain Mitzvos was this one of them?

  3. ani oymer,
Selling Chometz has a tremendous effect on a growing number of potencial Baalei Tshuva who are thinking about accepting more and more Mitzvos

  4. Finally someone is reigning in the disproportionate powers of the court.
As for Shas, Do they still have religious prinipals? Are they actually being run by gedolim?
