IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi in his response to MK (Meretz) Ran Cohen confirmed that some IDF officers and non-commissioned officers do indeed earn less than minimum wage.
Cohen stated he is outraged over the news that the IDF is in violation of the law, asking for an explanation for the unacceptable practice.
Ashkenazi stated the report is true, a fact of the military’s current bleak fiscal realities. He added one officer assigned to a non-combat position earns NIS 4,300 monthly, stating that while this is more than minimum wage, it is a disgrace but nevertheless a reality.
