Israel’s High Court of Justice ruled to allow a 45-day extension to the finally date of the existing draft law in Israel, hours after the previous deadline expired yesterday at midnight. The extension came at the request of the government.
The extension will now cause the Charedi parties to have to come to terms with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu in the next month and a half. Should they not, it is highly-likely that elections in Israel will be moved up to May instead of the anticipated date of November.
MK Nachman Shai (Zionist Union) responded to the decision by saying: “Another 45 days until the draft law can be resolved. This government is living on a respirator and its clock of sand is running out. It is more appropriate to call for elections now.”
Various Knesset officials have said that the major stumbling block for the Prime Minister to maintain his current coalition is the Draft Law. Should Netanyahu be able to pass the law there is a good chance that his government will last to term.
The meeting of the Moetzes of Agudas Yisroel (Admorim / Chassidim) was postponed until after the decision by the High Court of Justice as well.
