The threat of a major public sector strike in Israel continues to loom over the nation, with Histadrut National Labor Federation Chairman Avi Nissankoren threatening to launch the strike on Wednesday morning, 29 Marcheshvan.
The reason for the strike is to bring attention that will result in corrective action to prevent or at least minimize deaths on construction sites, with the labor leader explaining that some 40 construction workers have already been killed on the job in 2018, and about another 200 injured.
A public sector strike would include banks, the airports, stock exchange, and government offices.
A message released to the media from Yaffa Ben David, Secretary-General of the Teachers Union explains, “Regarding the strike scheduled for tomorrow in the economy: The Teachers Union will not join the strike. We strengthen our members in the Histadrut, who are concerned about the safety and lives of construction workers.
“In primary schools, junior high schools and special education, studies will be held as usual.”
Last-minute efforts to avert the strike continue, but even if it is launched, as it appears now, parents with children in public schools will not be affected.
Clearly yeshivos in the frum sector operate, but a strike could impact transportation for some talmidim.
