Despite his opposition in the past, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu is now agreeing to back a bill that would facilitate handing down a death penalty for convicted terrorists.
The current law demands a unanimous decision by the justices hearing the case. However, the bill presented by Yisrael Beitenu party chairman, Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman, would empower the court to hand down a death penalty on a terrorist convicted of murder with a simple majority of the justices.
According to the KAN News report, Bayit Yehudi party chairman Minister Naftali Bennet pushed Prime Minister Netanyahu on the matter, the bill which was brought up months ago but was stuck due to PM Netanyahu’s objections.
Now, with the Prime Minister on board, the bill can advance. It will move to the Ministerial Law Committee, which is chaired by a Bayit Yehudi MK, Nissim Slomiansky. The committee is expected to pass it and prepare it for its votes in Knesset.
The last execution carried out in Israel was back in 1962, Nazi officer Adolf Eichmann YM”S.
