Nikki Haley, the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, announced she was resigning during an appearance in the Oval Office with President Trump.
Haley has been a staunch defender of Israel at the U.N., and played a big role in key U.S. decisions such as recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and cutting hundreds of millions of dollars in funding to the Palestinians. Here’s a look back at some of her high profile moments on the world stage in the last 2 years, as covered on YWN:
She started off at her confirmation hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. “Nowhere has the UN’s failure been more consistent and more outrageous than in its bias against our close ally Israel,” she said. “Any honest assessment also finds an institution that is often at odds with American national interests and American taxpayers.”
She continued with that theme in her first meeting with journalists at the United Nations, saying the “U.S. is determined to stand up to the UN’s anti-Israel bias.”
In June 2017, Haley visited Israel and downplayed her efforts on behalf of Israel in meetings with Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Rivlin, saying all she had done was tell the truth. “If there’s anything I have no patience for is bullies, and the UN was being such a bully to Israel, because they could,” she said.
Nikki Haley explains President Trump’s decision to recognize as Jerusalem the capital of Israel:
She took the argument to the UN where she was surrounded by voices warning of the dire consequences the president’s decision would have on the Middle East peace process. She labeled the UN as one of the “world’s foremost centers of hostility toward Israel,” and said “we will not be a party to that, the United States no longer stands by when Israel is unfairly attacked in the United Nations”.
She slammed the U.N. a week later when the U.S. vetoed a resolution supported the 14 other Security Council nation members that would have required President Trump to rescind his declaration of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
Trump then praised Haley when she warned the U.N. that the U.S. will be “taking names” of nations that vote in favor of a resolution against the Jerusalem declaration, and would cut funding.
At the UN we’re always asked to do more & give more. So, when we make a decision, at the will of the American ppl, abt where to locate OUR embassy, we don’t expect those we’ve helped to target us. On Thurs there’ll be a vote criticizing our choice. The US will be taking names. pic.twitter.com/ZsusB8Hqt4

When 128 nations did vote in favor of declaring the Jerusalem decision “null and void”, Haley gave a fiery speech warning the US “will remember”.
Haley slammed Palestinian President Abbas during a UN Security Council meeting, after he directed an Arabic curse word at President Trump during a speech.
In late January, Haley again slammed the UN after it conducted a review of 206 companies who operate in Israeli “settlements”, saying it was “the latest anti-Israel action” at the UN and a “waste of time.”
In February, she again blasted Abbas after Palestinian leadership told her to “shut up”. “I will decline the advice I was recently given by your top negotiator, Saeb Erekat. I will not shut up. Rather, I will respectfully speak some hard truths,” Haley said in her fiery speech.
In March, Haley blasted the UN ‘Human Rights’ Council for issuing more condemnations of Israel than of North Korea, Iran and Syria combined. This council “is foolish and unworthy of its name,” she said.
In May, Haley delivered a strong speech in defense of Israel after more than 60 Palestinian terrorists were killed on a single day of violence at the Gaza border, the day the US opened it’s embassy in Jerusalem.
She also faced off with protesters during a speech at Houston University who shouted “you are on a killing spree!” and “Nikki Haley you can’t hide, you signed off on genocide!”
Haley blasted the UN for ‘the height of hypocrisy’ after they refused to condemn Hamas for firing hundreds of rockets at Israel, but condemned Israel for defending its border with Gaza against Palestinian terrorists.
Israeli leaders offered warm wishes to Haley after she announced her resignation:
Thank you Amb. Haley for standing for the truth and exposing hypocrisy at the UN. Just as the people of Israel are grateful for the rock solid support @POTUS Trump has provided Israel in the Oval Office, we are grateful for the rock solid support you’ve provided Israel at the UN. pic.twitter.com/RFQ7u3lOvI

I would like to thank Nikki Haley, a true ambassador, from the depths of our hearts on behalf of all the citizens of Israel. Ambassador Haley was an uncompromising advocate of American policy towards the Middle East and Israel.

She never wavered in her support for our clear right to maintain the security of our region. More than once, by speaking clearly, she tore away the cynical smokescreen that was masking what the United Nations and international organizations were really doing.

I thank Ambassador Haley for her courage and for a term of office that will be remembered as a turning point in the relations between the US and international organizations, and the discriminatory stance that these organizations have taken Israel on more than one occasion.

Haley sheds little light on reason for leaving now and announcing before midterms. “There’s no personal reason,” adding that “sometimes it’s good” to rotate new people into positions

It is an honor to serve in the White House alongside so many great colleagues and I know that the President will nominate a formidable replacement for Ambassador Haley. That replacement will not be me.

Ambassador Haley has served America with dignity + distinction.
She is a bold reformer and has been an unwavering champion of truth, principled realism and integrity within the United Nations.
