According to a report filed with Australian officials by Israel, Ben Zygier, AKA “Prisoner X” was facing 20 years imprisonment for his serious crimes but he did not face a death sentence.
The report informs Australian officials that the prisoner was treated fairly, and was imprisoned under acceptable conditions, including family visits. It explains family members made tens of visits before he was found dead in his cell in December 2010.
Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr announced that Zygier was working for the Government of Israel, but he did not mention he was a Mossad agent. He added that Australia has determined that his Australian passport was not misused as first suspected and that the niftar was not connected to the Dubai assassination of Hamas commander Mahmoud al-Mabhouh in 2010.
