On Tuesday, 25-year-old Oranit Menachem of Bat-Shlomo died in an Indian hospital in Dharamshala after she was brought there in serious condition suffering from anaphylactic shock due to a severe allergic reaction. Menachem apparently had a severe allergy to milk and dairy products. According to friends of the deceased who were touring with her, Menachem was very careful about what she ate, but somehow, milk products must have been cooked in a pan that her food was in prior to her eating it, thus catalyzing the reaction.
A friend of the Menachem family spoke about Oranit as a person who: “loved the extreme. She was very active socially and even donated her hair to children suffering from cancer. She mentored a young girl who was suffering from cancer and invited her to her house during the holidays. She was a terrific person.”
When the incident occurred, Oranit had been staying at a town near Dharamshala, and was taken from there in an ambulance to Zoonal Hospital in serious condition. She passed away in the hospital.
Oranit has even managed to contact her father and relay that she wasn’t feeling well. She asked for his help in dealing with the insurance companies. “He attempted to find her whereabouts and get an ambulance to her as well as other methods of getting her the help she needed, but in India, things move very slowly, and it was simply too late,” said another friend of the family who wished to remain anonymous.
The Israeli Consul in Delhi and the Foreign Ministry were bringing Oranit’s body back to Israel for burial.
Oranit was learning in Industrial Management at Ben Gurion University in Beer Sheva where she was living.
