According to a Sunday evening news report, Arab MKs are promoting a condemnation of Israel in the UN.
As reported Sunday evening by the political bureau of the Evening News, Yaron Avraham, the Knesset members of the Arab List are planning a move in the United Nations against the Nationality Law and Israel, a move which at present seems to be approaching success.
According to the details received, a number of MKs from the Joint Arab List, along with Palestinian Ambassador Riyad Mansour and other senior Palestinian officials, are trying to lead to a condemnation that will embarrass Israel next month – a moment before the opening of the General Assembly and the arrival of all the leaders to New York, including Prime Minister Netanyahu.
In recent days, Israeli diplomats have been informed that Knesset members from the Joint List met with senior UN officials, including Rosemary DiCarlo, UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs. The MKs presented the Nationality Law and said: This law is reminiscent of the apartheid laws and you must act against it. This is not ordinary legislation. You have art that is supposed to protect minorities precisely from such legislation – all in order to form a majority for the initiative to condemn Israel at the UN.
Senior UN officials have updated Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, and asked him for his reaction as Israel’s representative. Of course, Israel and the United States, Danon and Nicky Hailey, are trying to block this initiative. Danon is already addressing Knesset Speaker Edelstein claiming, “The Arab MKs are striving against the State of Israel. They cynically cooperate with the Palestinian delegation in order to slander Israel.”
An Israeli source estimates that such a proposal will come into discussion and a vote next September.
Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein responded to the report saying, “Again MKs in the Israeli Knesset are undermining the state. Members of Knesset from the Joint List who receive salaries from the state and win all the parliamentary tools, still dare to discredit our name in the world. Anyone who collaborates with the Palestinian Authority against Israel should ask himself whether his place is in the Palestinian or Israeli parliament.”
