Incoming Israel Air Force Commander Brigadier-General Ido Nehushtan stated an IDF infantry presence in Gaza could indeed prevent the continued manufacture of rockets.
Nehushtan, who will assume command of the air force on May 14th, [at which time he will receive the rank of major-general], stated that without ground forces in Gaza, the manufacture of rockets used against Israel will continue. He used the IDF presence in Yehuda and Shomron to draw an analogy, explaining that terrorism is under control as a result of the constant infantry presence in those areas.
Reflecting back to Operation Defense Shield, he explained the suicide bombers are no less motivated, but after the major military operation [in April, 2002], their ability to carry out attacks has been sharply curtailed. He added that the IDF is not an autonomous body but awaits instructions from the political echelon.
Nehushtan also made note of the difficulties facing Israel since terrorists in Gaza are based deep inside civilian areas, but these realities he stated must be addressed and Hamas’ ongoing efforts build her military capabilities and attack Israel must be curtailed.
Commenting on the build-up of shelters for residents of Sderot and surrounding communities, the former combat pilot stated “this is no way to raise children,” stating we must focus on dismantling the Hamas military infrastructure.
Nehushtan’s comments were made two months ago during a lecture delivered at the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs and publicized on Sunday, March 16th.
