About two months after the start of work on the new maritime barrier on the Zikim beach, the Border & Seamline Planning Administration and the Engineering & Construction Department at the Ministry of Defense reveal first pictures of the site.
The decision to erect an upgraded naval barrier was accepted by the Border Authority and was coordinated, in cooperation with the IDF’s Gaza Division and Southern Command, as a lesson from the Operation Protective Edge. The new response to the security threat was designed to withstand the sea conditions and serve the defense establishment for many years.
Data on the barrier along the Gaza border: The length of the barrier is 200 meters, the width is 50 meters, and the fence is 6 meters high. This structure will require additional measures that will provide full coverage of the entire sea against infiltrations.
Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman: “The construction of the barrier around the Gaza Strip, both land and sea, is progressing at a rapid and impressive pace, and every day that passes, our counterterrorism capabilities around the Gaza Strip are growing stronger.
Brigadier-General Eran Ophir, Head of Borders & Seamline said: “We are working with all our might to complete the work on the maritime barrier that is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The barrier, an impermeable type of pier, will consist of three layers, including a layer below sea level, an additional layer of armor stone and a third layer of “curl” fence. In addition to the three layers, another fence (“the hourglass”) will surround the compound that will provide a response to the security threat.”
