State Likely To Petition The High Court For An Extension To The IDF Draft Law

The state is likely to petition the High Court of Justice on Sunday, 3 Menachem Av, seeking a seven-month extension to legislate a new draft law, which has passed its first reading in Knesset.

The Agudas Yisrael faction of Yahadut Hatorah is threatening to break from the coalition of the law is advanced without requesting the delay, in line with instruction from its Moetzas Gedolei HaTorah. However, even if the members of this faction leave, there would still be a majority of 62 for the coalition. However, PM Netanyahu would prefer the additional four votes for his coalition.

Itai Ben-Chorin will be petitioning the court too, representing the “Forum for Sharing the Burden”. The organization remains opposed to the postponement: “We are opposed to delaying the bill. We have been delaying for 20 years. Let the army draft under the Defense Service Law, and the political affairs will end in your time.

“Not all IDF recruits should be held captive by some 80-year-old rabbis who have not yet decided what they think of the matter and are trying to concoct a political deal hanging over the heads of the [political] representatives.”

  1. “Not all IDF recruits should be held captive by some 80-year-old rabbis… is this the language expected in the so-called Jewish state? If a German or French politician would have spoken like this the whole Jewish State and world would be up in arms calling it unacceptable anti-semitism.
