MK (Machane Tzioni) Merav Michaeli referred to the recent earthquakes and what she perceives to be the lack of preparedness of the state. She is initiating a bill for civil preparedness in emergency situations and hopes to move it ahead for a vote. She explains “Already in the 19th Knesset, I initiated a bill aimed at ensuring that Israel is prepared and that citizens are not abandoned in any emergency, a security situation, natural disaster or other situation.”
Many reports, including the state comptroller’s report, have been written about the government’s failure and the need for civilian preparedness for emergency situations, emergency situations are also combat situations, but also the result of natural and other disasters such as the Carmel fire, the storm in Jerusalem and earthquakes. There was a lack of synchronization between the various bodies.
Michaeli warns the citizens may not be abandoned and additional preparedness is essential prior to a real emergency situation.
