Maklev Declares Degel Hatorah Opposes Economic Sanctions In The New Draft Law

MK (Degel Hatorah) Uri Maklev, a member of the special committee amending the new draft law, announced on Thursday afternoon, 22 Tammuz, that he told committee members that chareidi parties are opposed to economic sanctions for non-compliance to the new draft law, citing they are “offensive and unbalanced”.

Maklev added the sums that would be involved in the economic sanctions are exorbitant.

It should be noted that the committee began its Thursday session in the morning and is holding marathon sessions to have the law ready for its final votes before the current Knesset session ends in less than two weeks.

It should be emphasized that to date, the chareidi parties have not officially declared that they object to the economic sanctions clause, inter alia because they say that the law does not contain a section of criminal sanctions, such as Yair Lapid’s law.

Earlier, Maklev said during the discussion: “We are here to preserve the status of lomdei Torah. I do not intervene in the discussion because now these sections are talking about those who are leaving the full time limud.”

So only someone who learns 45 hours a week is worthy of being saved from the draft – someone who learns less than that, or in an “unrecognized” (by the Defense Minister) yeshivah/kollel, is not a ben Torah?
And they wonder why people are saying that the “frum” MKs are selling out the chareidi community.

  2. yehuda26, ,
Eh..There has to be a division somewhere
Where should it be ? 10 hours? 60 hours?

Are all children really the same biologically?
Yet Chazal tell us 13 is Bar Mitzvah for everyone .

  3. So he’s fine with the criminal sanctions aspect of the law?
That very clause that Rav Shteinman cried over. Rav Shteinman said criminal sanctions are a chillul Hashem, because how can it be that the ‘jewish’ state will arrest lomdei torah.
After that, Rav Shteinman called the עצרת המיליון, the million man protest.
For that law, the frum MK’s tore kria in front of the Knesset.
Yet today, the frum MK’s are championing this law through the Knesset. They voted against it only after making sure the law would pass regardless.
    These are our frum MK’s.
