According to the head of the IDF’s Human Resource Unit, 3,000 chareidim entered the military this year, of which 1,000 entered combat units.
Brigadier-General Eran Shani spoke to members of the special ministerial committee amending the new draft law on Thursday morning, 22 Tammuz, explaining the chareidi inductees “are smart and extremely talented and they do amazing work and make a significant contribution to the IDF and this cannot be disputed”.
The bill was passed into its first reading in Knesset earlier this week and the committee is responsible for amending the law and preparing it for its second and third/final vote in Knesset. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman are interested having the bill passed into law by the end of the current Knesset session, less than two weeks.
The chareidim are divided on the bill at present, with the Agudas Yisrael faction of Yahadut Hatorah now trying to stall. Deputy Health Minister Yaakov Litzman has been speaking with PM Netanyahu, asking him to freeze the bill until after the current session. The Degel Hatorah faction of Yahadut Hatorah and the Shas party appear to disagree with Agudas Yisrael. They seem to prefer to have the committee make minor changes and then pass it into law, realizing this may be the best alternative available to them. According to a recent Chareidim10 report, this is the opinion of HaGaon HaRav Chaim Kanievsky Shlita, who explained to Degel Hatorah faction MKs this is not the time to break apart the coalition.

nebech nebech…tinik sheneehsbee
daass torah, With regards to this story of the Chareidim going into the IDF
1. You are highly insulting the Chareidim, because you express zero confidence that they will remain strong and frum. I happen to believe in them, daven for them, and have hakaros hatov- very different than that way you think and act
2. What is the trap? To protect E’Y so it doesn’t get attacked or taken away by the Arab world? If E’Y became under Arab rule, you won’t be able to vacation there for Pesach anymore. A Rasha might be someone who who slit the throat of a Jewish child and dance with candy afterwards- not an IDF soldier, not an Israeli policeman, not an Israeli fireman!
3. Do we really think that Hashem will protect E’Y because of YOUR merits of learning and your acts of chesed?
“Rebyossel”. Your comment make zero sense First of all they come from Charadei homes so how are they tinik sheneehsbee second they are not mumarim
Kol Hakavod.. Chazak Baruch.
This is a good development
The soldiers will remain frum
Contribute to Israel and will feel good about their service to our people
Hashem should protect them
Hashem yeracheim.
Very unfortunate that for something that Rav Shach said is יהרג ואל יעבור, some commenters are proud of.
TGIShabbos, we say every day אל תביאנו לידי מכשול, the IDF is referred to as a ‘hothouse for exploitative relationships’. It is not possible to come out of the IDF on the same spiritual level that they came in.
Especially when you look at the numbers more closely, 69% were between the ages of 18-20. 85% were single.
We should tear kriah for every single one that falls into the IDF.
I once heard that around half of the Mizrachi boys that enlist walk out completely secular.
Imagine what the percentage is by Chareidim…
What makes them Chareidy? Their beard and payos? If they voluntarily enlisted to the army they are certainly not chareidy.
No doubt by the end of their army service they are no longer going to be chareidy and that’s all the zionists want.
EY has not become under Arab rule over 70 years despite the absence of chareidy soldiers and is not going to come under Arab rule in the future even without any chareidy soldiers. The IDF does not need and does not want the chareidim it’s all an attempt to steer as many chareidim into the secular world.
Yes, we really believe that Hashem is protecting E”Y because of the merits of the 100’000 bochrim and avreichim learning torah. The IDF is completely powerless against its enemys. A few Iranian bombs choliloh and the land would be finished. It’s only Hashem’s protection in the zechus of torah and Mitzvos.
