Defense Ministry: Draft Law Includes Criminal Sanctions

Since the Defense Ministry’s special committee published the new draft law, the chareidi parties, along with Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked, have repeatedly attacked the chairman of Yesh Atid, who said he would support the law because it was similar to a law that included criminal sanctions.

The chareidim claimed that the law does not include criminal sanctions, but general economic sanctions on the Torah world, should the chareidim fail to meet recruitment goals.

But the Defense Ministry legal advisor Itai Ophir, confirmed Wednesday that the new draft law has criminal sanctions, contrary to all the claims of the chareidi parties and the minister Shaked.

According to the report in Yediot Achronot, Ophir, who headed the committee that drafted the new law: “If, for three consecutive years, 85% of the recruitment target is not met, the law expires, meaning de facto the application of the Defense Service Law.”

“What it means is when you say ‘criminal sanctions’ is that the Defense Service Law applies, and those who are required to report to the army according to the law and do not stand up are subject to criminal sanctions.”

MK (Yesh Atid) Elazar Stern, a member of the committee, responded with half enthusiasm and said, “All along we said that this law which the Defense Ministry leads, is like the law proposed by Yesh Atid, which leads to criminal sanctions.
