The Knesset Interior Committee on Monday morning, 12 Tammuz, discussed the matter of kallah classes for females being married by the Chief Rabbinate of Israel. All women, including non-religious, are required to learn with a certified kallah teacher prior to being approved for her wedding. She must receive a piece of paper certifying she has completed her classes, and that paper is given to the local Rabbanut representative handling her marriage file.
Non-religious MKs are now trying to see what they can do regarding the need for all woman to learn, even those who are non-religious or not interested. Some view this as yet another step to challenge the Chief Rabbinate and its control over marriage and divorce in Eretz Yisrael.
