On Tuesday morning 6 Tammuz, MK Moshe Gafne announced his party would not back the Muezzin Law, and without the chareidi party’s support, the bill will not pass into law. There were already rumors back in the winter that the Arab List would not vote in favor of a draft law which the chareidim object to, in exchange for the chareidim killing the Muezzin Law, which seeks to silence the mosques around Israel by setting a maximum decibel limit and operating hours during which broadcasting is permitted.
Gafne’s announcement led to a harsh verbal attack against the chareidim by MK (Bayit Yehudi) Moti Yogev, who stated, “In order to continue to evade enlistment [into the IDF], in exchange for Arab’ support for the draft law and to bring down the amendment to the Muezzin Law in return, the chareidim will sell Eretz Yisrael, the State of Israel. The chareidim will sell the citizens of Israel.”
Yogev added, “There is no one who is exempt from conscription into the IDF, which is a great mitzvah, just as there is no one who is exempt from limud Torah in the Jewish People and the ‘how’ to accomplish this and advance the law will still be studied”.
