Regarding The Passing Over Of Brigadier-General Winter For The Post Of Division Commander

This week, the IDF General Staff announced the latest senior promotions and Brigadier-General Ofir Winter, who hoped to be appointed as a division commander, was passed over for promotion.

Former IDF Major-General and Deputy Director of the Mossad, Amiram Levin, spoke out on the matter. Levin tweeted, “Winter should be appointed Division Commander. The discussion is not suitable to command a division or to be a general in the General Staff – the question of who should be appointed. The IDF is full of good and suitable commanders, but lacks surprising, daring and unusual commanders. That’s why the IDF needs Winter. Politicization of the discussion does an injustice to Winter and the Chief of General Staff, and is not appropriate.”

  1. The IDF’s glass ceiling just got less transparent. It is visible to everyone now.

I remember an interview with a Yeshiva student many years ago. He was asked why he is not willing to serve in the IDF. He answered: “Why should I serve in an army that will never let me rise to its upper ranks. They will never allow a religious Jew to be at the top.”

  2. Aryeh, I’m certain the IDF lost out big time with this Yeshiva student not enlisting. Imagine sitting in the yeshiva, knowing one is gifted mentally, physically, and socially to lead, plan, work in a situation where days and nights often seem like one big blur, and be able to improvise at a second’s notice and rise to the top of the IDF command, yet refusing to enlist because of politics. Send me the name of the yeshiva and I’ll try to get a few commanders of some elite units (Shaldag, Sayeret Matkal, Shayetet) to beg him to enlist
