The Israeli military on Thursday released a video showing a female Palestinian paramedic in the Gaza Strip lobbing a smoke grenade at the demonstration.
In the video, Razan al-Najjar is seen in a white coat throwing the grenade with her face partially covered by a mask.
The footage was released two days after the army said an internal review had determined Najjar was not intentionally targeted by snipers, following international outcry over her death.
“Razan al-Najjar is not the angel of mercy Hamas propaganda is making her out to be,” IDF Arabic spokesman Avichay Adraee tweeted.
Najjar, 21, was shot last Friday while trying to evacuate wounded people during a mass demonstration near the Israeli border. Najjar, a volunteer paramedic, had been treating a wounded protester shortly before she was shot and was wearing a white medical vest that identified her as a health worker.
The Israeli military said Palestinian militants had attacked its troops along the border with gunfire and a grenade.
“An initial examination regarding the incident … found that a small number of bullets were fired … and that no shots were deliberately or directly aimed towards her,” part of a brief statement issued by the Israeli army said.
The investigation was continuing, the statement added, and findings will be examined by senior commanders and then passed to military prosecutors for consideration.
