Jerusalem City Hall explains that due to the position of the Ministry of Education, specifically the Jerusalem District Court ruling, over 500 girls attending the Beis Yaakov Elementary (Klein) School in the N’vei Yaakov neighborhood of Yerushalayim will soon find themselves out in the Street, without a school. The court ruled to cut off funding to the school on Balvan Street.
The result of the ruling is that over 500 girls will have to vacate the building no later than July 22, 2018. At present, there is no replacement building available to them.
City officials explain Education Ministry interference into the allocation and funding to the school led to the court decision, and the fact the over 500 students are now without a school is the blame of the ministry exclusively, and not City Hall. City officials explain the ministry interfered in matters based on an old law that is no longer applicable. The ministry demanded a permit for allocation the building for the chareidi girls, which the city did not have. The girls study under extremely crowded conditions along with using temporary and portable structures, but now, all this is gone. The city explains ministry interference led to the court intervening. The court only addressed the technical issues, and the lack of a permit, resulting in the eviction order.
The city is planning to appeal the ruling but for now, the girls are without a building. City attorney Uri Kedar sent a strongly-worded letter to the Director-General of the Education Ministry, informing the ministry it alone caused this and it alone is now responsible for finding a solution.
