An Iranian official was quoted on Sunday as saying that his country could create enriched uranium in two to three days.
The Spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, Behrouz Kamalvandi, told officials at the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting that Iran will be prepared for a resumption of nuclear activities which were suspended under the nuclear deal that was signed in 2015 due to the recent pullout from the and the resumption of sanctions by the United States. According to demands now being made by the Trump administration, Iran is to halt all enrichment of Uranium and end its involvement in the conflicts in the Middle East, including those in Syria, Yemen, Lebanon, and Afghanistan before it will negotiate a new deal.
Iran requested that the other powers who signed the treaty meet in order to determine how to move forward. That meeting took place this past Friday.
Following the meeting, the Deputy Foreign Minister of Iran, Abbas Araghchi, said: “We are negotiating… to see if they can provide us with a package which can give Iran the benefits of sanctions lifting. The next step is to find guarantees for that package,” he said.
According to reports by various agencies, Iranian officials have said they expect such a package to be presented by the end of May.
“We got the sense that Europeans, Russia and China… are serious and they recognize that JCPOA’s survival depends on the interests of Iran being respected,” Araghchi added.
