Degel Hatorah’s Decision Expected Regarding Beit Shemesh Mayoral Race

Beit Shemesh City Hall and the Shas party await the announcement from the Degel Hatorah faction of Yahadut Hatorah regarding the upcoming municipal elections. The incumbent, Mayor Moshe Abutbul of Shas, is waiting to hear if Degel will back his bid for reelection, or alternatively, announce its own candidate to run against him.

During recent months, the buzz in Degel has been to run with it own candidate and not support Abutbul. The most likely candidates would be either Moshe Montag or Shmulik Greenberg. One of the risks is that if the chareidi vote is split in the city, the opposing candidate, who represents the secular and dati leumi communities might be able to emerge with a victory this time around.

The dati leumi and secular residents of the city contested the last election. The matter reached the High Court of Justice, which ordered a second round of elections in which Abutbul was reelected.

  1. halevi the chareidi vote is split and an honest mayor is elected; the alternative will result in more DL and chiloni residents to flee and leave another city in poverty.
