MK Tamar Sandberg from Meretz was chosen by the party on Thursday during an internal primary election to lead the party, following the resignation of Zahava Gal-On who stepped down from the position.
Zandberg took a whopping 71.12 percent of the vote, leaving Avi Buskila with only some 28.48 percent of the vote.
Some 17,031 card-carrying members of the party turned up to vote in what was the first ever primary election of the party.
When her victory was announced Zandberg said: “I want to thank you all. Today is a very important day. But today is not my day, it is a day for Meretz, and it is for all of us together. Over the past few months, something amazing has occurred, we have come back trusting ourselves and believing in ourselves. We have come back to the political arena and we have returned to being a viable alternative to the Likud. As of tomorrow morning, Meretz will lead a revolution.”
