[UPDATE BELOW] An American tourist was killed, and another still missing on Monday afternoon in one of the fiercest flash-floods Ein Gedi (Nachal Dovid) had seen in years. A large rescue team is searching for the missing person [whom rescuers believe might be a woman]. No names have been released as of this time.
Strong rains have brought about a sudden flooding of the riverbed, and in the early afternoon the body of the American tourist was discovered in the water.
UPDATE: The body of the woman who had earlier been feared dead – has been found alive by rescuers.
Inexperienced hikers are fooled by dry weather near the Dead Sea – unaware that rains from as far away as Yerushalayim end up in the Nachal as deadly rivers. Flash flooding had been predicted by Israeli weather forecasters.
In a related incident, Arutz 7 reports that rescue personnel were called to Ein Gedi at approximately the same time to rescue 100 students who were trapped on a riverbed (by the flash-flooding). No one was injured in that incident.

American tourist drowns in flash flood near Dead Sea

A 30-year-old American tourist drowned Monday in a flash flood while hiking in Nahal David near the Dead Sea, police said.
His wife found shelter in a cave and was later rescued by police.
Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said the body of the man, who was in his

Rosenfeld said the dead man’s name and other details were not immediately
available. The U.S. Embassy spokesman could not be reached for comment.
The Dead Sea, the world’s lowest point at about 430 meters (1,400 feet) below sea level, is surrounded by desert and generally arid cliffs. At certain times of the year, however, rain falling in hills miles (kilometers) away can come rushing down the steep descents, causing sudden and violent torrents in otherwise dry spots.
