MAZEL TOV! Chareidi Woman From Har Nof Takes First Place Among Israelis in Jerusalem Marathon

Tens of thousand participated in the 8th Jerusalem Marathon this past erev Shabbos, including Beatie Deutsch, a Chareidi resident of the Har Nof neighborhood of Jerusalem, who came in first place for women among Israelis.

While there were other women who crossed the finish line ahead of her, they were runners from abroad. Beatie was the first Israeli woman to cross the finish line, the fifth female and 25th overall quickest runner to finish the 42K (26 mile) marathon, which she completed in 3 hours, 9 minutes and 48 seconds.

However, what stood out about Deutsch was her head covering, long skirt and shirt sleeves and her young children cheering on from the sidelines.

Beatie is a 28-year-old mother of five who came on Aliyah from the USA five years ago. She has full-time job at a nonprofit but still finds time to train. “My journey to this marathon has not always been easy,” she wrote on Facebook. “There were ups and downs.”

This is the first time she participated in the Jerusalem marathon. Last year, she ran the Tel Aviv marathon while seven months pregnant, finishing with an impressive 4:08 time, well below the average time for women marathoners.

She told the media she did not run for her ego, but rather to support two charities: The One Family Fund, which aims to support victims of terrorism and their families and Beit Daniella, a rehab facility founded in memory of her cousin, Daniella Chaya Pardes. She was working to raise some of the $30,000 required by the organization to move into a new facility.

She calls her win “A gift from HK”BH, for giving her the ability and talent to run the race.”

  2. I won’t use the much hyped “Kiddush hashem” terminology which gets invoked here all the time for much less significant happenings but simply say this is an amazing accomplishment for a baas yisroel who is shomeret torah umitzvos and also manages to hold a professional position. She should be a role model for other young women in the frum tzibur.

  3. Gadolhadorah
She should be a role model for other young women in the frum tzibur.
the gadol hador has spoken : this is what all good yidishe mamas should aspire to.

  4. …amazing accomplishment, i mean, wow! forget about all the hundreds of thousands of women who stay at home with their children, dedicated to bringing them up with Torah and yiras Shamayim, instead of looking for “fulfilment” in a “profession.” It’s the women who run through the streets who should be role models for the young generation! Unbelievable!

  5. This is not what a true baas Yisroel is all about this is far from a Kiddush Hashem, we were brought to know ‘Kol Kevoida Bas Melech Penima’ ,

  6. To Yoffi….YES….this is what I would hope most young frum women aspire to…raising 5 children, achieving success in a career and earning a parnassah, taking pride in your physical well being, being shomeret torah umitzvos and most important showing empowerment against a chorus of male chauvinists who cloak their myscogeny with mindeless directives to avoid getting a secular education, stay home in the kitchen and have more babies.

  7. Dear Gadolhadorah
Your list of priorities in their order of importance is very revealing.
Please remember on seder night our Four Imahos weren’t failures.
