Kaya, the Netanyahu family dog, has passed away just before her 13th birthday.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and family adopted Kaya in 2015.
Kaya had been hospitalized for months. Two months ago, Kaya’s death seemed imminent after suffering complications during a surgery. Avner Netanyahu returned home from Australia at that time.
Kaya was no stranger to headlines. Once, Yair Netanyahu was caught failing to pick up after her on one of her walks. She also bit MK Sharren Haskel and the husband of Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely, Or Alon, at a candle-lighting ceremony for Likud members in the Prime Minister’s Residence in 2015. Several months earlier, she also bit the Prime Minister who then received rabies vaccinations, a standard procedure in such situations.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released the statement in an emotional post on social media:
“Our beloved Kaya is gone. 2 months ago, Kaya collapsed after a herniated disk broke in her neck that paralyzed her. After hydrotherapy treatments and oxygen therapy proved unsuccessful, two days ago all of us – my wife Sara, Yair, and Avner – came to say goodbye to her.
How much happiness and light it has brought to our lives. We learned from Kaya what is the soul and consciousness of animals. Kaya was a great soul that entered the heart of everyone who met her. We were happy to give her a home and family and thus extend her life for years, and she gave us back a lot of joy.
On this occasion we call upon all who can adopt adult animals: Give them a home and a life – and you will get so much warmth and love from them. Kaya was a seven-generation racial Alaskan. She was born on Kibbutz Givat Brenner, won many beauty contests and showed exceptional intelligence and sensitivity. We hoped so much that she would return to us, and would, at least once in her life, experience snow in Jerusalem. Kaya was part of our family. How great is our grief at leaving us. We will always remember her.”
Our condolences to the Prime Minister and family during this difficult time.
