Mir Yerushalayim Forbids Shopping At Local Stores Who Refuse To Close At 11PM

Yeshivas Mir Yeshiva Yerushalayim is increasing efforts to deter patronage at local food establishments that are open late into the night in their neighborhood of Beis Yisroel.

Previously, the Yeshiva issued a request to all stores in the area that they should close after 11:00 p.m. Now the Yeshiva is initializing an agressive campaign against those stores who have decided not to listen to the Yeshiva’s request.

In a large sign that was hung at the entrance of the Yeshiva, the Hanhalah wrote [translated]: “To all students of the holy Yeshiva: Blessings from heaven on high, to all those store and restaurant owners who took it upon themselves to listen to the decree of our Rabbonim and Gedolim to close their stores at 11:00 p.m. May the merit of the many be upon them.”

The yeshiva specifically mentions the name of a store that has chosen to defy the instruction of the Rosh Yeshiva and neighborhood Rabbonim, as follows: “We would like to remind everyone that according to our Rabbis, any store that is open after 11:00 p.m. such as ‘Rega Matuk’ should not be patronized during any hours of the day until they acquiesce to the aforementioned decree, at which point may Hashem’s blessing be upon them for much success.”

“We would also like to point out and address the issue of food carts that operate near the yeshiva and have no hechsher or teudah, as there is a great stumbling block in this. Gathering around these food carts and eateries during daytime Seder and during the night hours goes against the wisdom of the sages and is unbecoming of Bnei Torah and Bnei Aliyah.”

  1. 10000 percent. Reb nosson tzvi at the end of his life got out of his wheelchair in front of that store rega matuk and asked him to close and he gave a flat no. he has no derech eretz I saw him hitting someone once for speaking deragatorily about berland. He doesnt need to have his store open so late with loud music blaring. Shut down at 11 or open somewhere else.

  2. Seriously? The Mir thinks it’s OK to take away someone’s parnassah because the owner won’t comply with Mir’s “request”? I thought we left Communism behind. Shame on anyone who refuses to shop there because of this Gezeira. If I lived anywhere near there, you can be very sure I would shop there.,..dafka.

    This dictatorship is outrageous..

  3. “Gathering around these food carts and eateries during daytime Seder and during the night hours goes against the wisdom of the sages and is unbecoming of Bnei Torah and Bnei Aliyah”

I think gathering around them “during daytime seder” is also a problem of bittul Torah…

  4. TWO Stores already close down, because they didn’t make enough money after being forced to be closed after 11pm. A third one is about to close too. I am shocked why the people that are forcing the stores to close after 11, are not trying to help these stores that are listening to the Rabonim, but don’t make enough money and have to close shop.

  5. hml, you may be irreligious or religious-light and think you can do what you want. We Torah Jews know we most follow the dictates of our rabbonim.

  6. @joseph what about all the jews who are off the derech because rabbeim didnt treat them properly? how about those who were abused by rabbeim? so we should blindly follow the rabbis? they are making a mistake with this one. it should be on the rabbeim to educate the talmidim on not wasting time and not leaving seder. not the stores trying to make a living.

  7. > Joseph

Just who says that the rabbonim in MIr are the rabbonim of the stores in question? The stores (store owners) may have their own rabbonim.

  8. > Joseph

“We Torah Jews know we most follow the dictates of our rabbonim.”

You don’t see the self-contradiction in your own statement? As example, are the Mir students not Torah Jews, or, if they are Torah Jews and listened to their rabbonim and don’t patronize these stores at 11 PM, then what reason do the rabbonim have for closing the stores at 11 PM?

  9. Stores weren’t always open so late in Yerushalayim. It is a sign of the times we live in. Everyone is so gashmiusdik now, so into eating etc. The yeshiva provides decent and filling meals, yet the bochurim always have to go out and buy more. Where do they all have so much money from? Is everyone from such well to do homes that they have bottomless pockets and can spend so much on food? I think the yeshiva is right. The stores are only open because of the yeshiva and the boys should not need to be eating so late at night. Either they should be learning or go to bed at a normal time so they can get up to learn in the morning. It is not a camp, it’s a yeshiva!

  10. I do not understand why are the Rabbonim asking these stores to close? Are the boys leaving yeshiva and “hanging” out there all night? Aren’t there yungerleit who are married and need to quickly shop for groceries at that time? Aren’t there other residents in the neighborhoods near the Mir who benefit from those stores besides the Mir attendees?

  11. hml, birdson i learned in the mir and at night its worse to be there when there open late by day because theres hoilielus (frivolty) going on there at night as opposed by day theres hundreds of yungeleit going by the street not much room for lightheadedness. anyone who learned in the mir will tell you that, theyll also tell you that mir is not so strong and rough on people there more the meek type so you portryaing them as mafia that bully people is dead wrong completely dead wrong. these stores must be doing alot to cause the mir which is known not to be so rough and mix in politics to speak out. so maybe think 2x before your nasty comments

  12. iacisrmma,
Have you ever visited reag matok? And at what time does your own local bakery close? Don’t tell me that you do your daily errands at 3 am

  13. This is very troubling that Mir rabbis think they have authority over stores in the neighborhood. If yeshiva has trouble controlling their students, that is something they have to resolve with their students who signed up to be in this yeshiva. The store owners did not sign up for this yeshiva and have no obligation towards it. This chillul Hashem is worse than anything the students can pick up at these stores after 11.

  14. Koneg

I have been known to visit the ShopRite in Brooklyn at 4:00 AM – 5:00 AM. I do not know Rega Matok but Goldberg’s Grocery on 18th Avenue in Boro Park is open 24/5 and closes Erev Shabbos close to shkia.

  15. @iacisrmma,
Let me tell you this: Rega matok is no shoprite. They aren’t providers of diapers or a light bulb.
As far as i remember, they are a small shop selling not much more than alcohol, candy, and cigarettes becoming a hangout for guys who are awake during (how should I put it?) the later/early hours of the day. The store sometimes blasts music and the guys make noise schmoozing loudly, disturbing neighbors and waking those who actually want to learn the next day. I don’t know about you, but i wouldn’t want my 17 year old hanging out at that store at 2 am. Very nice that those stores came to make parnassa off some Mir guys and disrupt the once quiet area, they just shouldn’t count on it happening at the wee hours of the morning.

  16. Takes2-2Tango,
We’re you there when the previous Rosh Yeshiva gave the Shmuz about hanging out in the stores after 11. I was. There was pain in his voice. If you weren’t there and did not discuss it with him, you may keep your assumptions to yourself.

  17. And Mindful,
It isn’t that the Mir is trying to control the neighborhood, on the contrary: most of these stores specifically chose this location targeting the Mir bochurim. But by doing that, these stores are fully responsible for pulling out the Mir boys and making the entire neighboring area noisy at night. It is the Mirs responsibility and duty towards the locals to stand up to this. The claim of parnassa isn’t enough of an argument for opportunistic disruption! על המזיק להרחיק את עצמו

  18. To Hml:
I was able to notice from your comment that you are an extremely bitter person, not happy, angry at many different people. You need professional help ASAP.
