During a routine license check at a checkpoint near Pisgat Ze’ev in Jerusalem on Wednesday, Tu B’Shevat, a 21-year-old Yungerman affiliated with Toldos Aharon was taken into custody for failing to register for the draft and he has been wanted by military police for over a half of a year.
Authorities have during recent months stepped-up efforts to apprehend chareidim who are wanted by authorities for failing to register as bnei torah in yeshivos or report for military service. In this case, the avreich is a nephew of the Toldos Aharon Rebbe.
The avreich’s mother, Rebitzen Raize Rothenberg of Beit Shemesh is well-known on her own merit, having established and runs the “זה לזה” chessed organization for orphans.
Her son was taken to an IDF lockup in Anatot and a hearing follows, which will determine his future detention. He is being represented by prominent attorney Menachem Stauber, who is often called upon to assist chareidim arrested by military authorities.
On Wednesday night, a granddaughter of the rebbe, a daughter of the rebbe’s son Rav Moshe Kahan is set to take place in Antwerp, Belgium. The rebbe was already in Belgium at the time of the arrest.

Whats the big deal that makes this newsworthy? He either (I) registered for the exemption available to bnai torah who are full time learners and the police made a mistake and he will be released quickly OR (ii) he did not register, knew he was violating the law but did so as a form of civil disobedience/religious conviction knowing that he could end up spending several months in jail. Either way, its not a news event since these types of arrests happen every day….the only difference here being his relationship to a chashuve rav (which means nothing from a legal compliance perspective).
Yup, in agreement with above.
Register or not!
Live in the country or leave!
Totally agree. And pray tell, what difference does it make who his mother is? Relevance?
