The Israel Nature & Park Authority (INPA) feels that the planned construction of ‘Park HaMessila’ should be canceled and a park should be built in its place. Environmentalists support the park, but not the building of a park that accommodates and includes the Jerusalem light rail route.
The INPA has filed objections to the current planned route of the Blue Line of the light rail, which it insists is going to compromise old trees and nature areas which make up the character of the area and are of historic significance. Hundreds of trees will be cut down according to the current plan, environmentalists explain.
While they acknowledge the significance of the light rail, they feel the trees are of no less significance and therefore, they would like to see the Blue Line re-routed to Emek Refaim Street to avoid cutting down trees, ripping up the ground, historical fences and electric infrastructure. INPA officials feel an integrated plan that accommodates the environment and future transportation needs of the city is the way to go, citing if the alternative route is accepted, it is a win/win for commuters and area residents alike.
Ministry of Transportation officials respond, citing the final route is still to be decided upon and these recommendations will be considered as well. Emek Refaim residents insist that due to the narrow street, bringing the light rail would be disastrous, and in fact, the light rail would destroy the quality of life enjoyed today. They add the association represents thousands of store owners and residents and they will fight any attempt to re-route the light rail to Emek Refaim Street.
