Israel Police’s Traffic Enforcement Unit works hard to prevent accidents and road fatalities. In the following video, we are given a synopsis of the unit’s efforts and results pertaining to 2017. The report is given by the commander of the unit, Doron Yedid.
The use of phones is the number one cause of accidents and enforcement in this area has been increased by tens of percent. This includes issuing summonses to drivers who are not paying attention to the road. Yedid emphasizes this does not include looking at Waze or getting a tissue, but taking the phone and using it while operating a vehicle.
Yedid explains his men are quite good at what they do, and they can determine if one is reaching for a tissue or changing radio stations or alternatively, sending and receiving text messages. “It is not about more enforcement but about saving lives” he emphasizes. He adds they are way too experienced to try to sell stories, that one was only reaching for a tissue when in fact, it was the phone.
Yedid concludes when operating a vehicle, that is all a driver must be concerned with and the remainder can be addressed when finished driving.
