How Are Chareidi Combat Soldiers Fed In The IDF?

The saying in the IDF is “The army marches on its stomach,” stressing the importance of feeding combat soldiers well. That being the case, a soldier in Nachal Chareidi photographed the meal he and his colleagues were served, noting when it comes to chareidi soldiers there appears to be a different standard.

The photo was sent by a combat soldier from a chareidi unit serving in the field, stating the day began at 6:00am and this was breakfast. The soldier added “we didn’t even get a piece of bread,” and anyone who has served in the IDF knows there is usually an abundance of bread at all meals.

Kikar Shabbos News reports that at the time of this report, there was no response from the IDF Spokesman’s Unit.

  1. OMG. Poor baby. They gave him 2 hard-boiled eggs and fresh vegetables. Oh the suffering entailed. What exactly is he looking for – a 5 star buffet breakfast.

Now remember, they had to cut up fresh vegetables. Get them from an acceptable source with truma and ma’aser taken.

They have protein, fat, and carbs in that breakfast.

How is this a news article?

  2. @rebtsvi- The photo shows a nice breakfast for a teenaged girl before she goes off to school, not for a soldier in a combat unit! And where, pray tell, do you see any carbs in that meal? פת שחרית it’s definitely not- maybe “mid-day snack”…

  3. Other than the lack of bread, that’s not an atypical Israeli meal. Eggs, cheese, and vegetables should be fine enough, but bread should have been included as well.

    an Israeli Yid

  4. rebtsvi – looks like you are playing a game of semantics. The context makes it self-evident that the topic is sufficient amount of carbs for military-style activities. The foods in the picture are recommended foods for “low carb” diets.

  5. @rebtsvi Your hate is dripping! An egg has 0.6 g carbs. So with 2 eggs you have 1.2 grams. A serving of salad has about 1g of carbs,a serving of cucumbers have 1.9g carbs. So you have a grand total of 4.1g carbs. Comparatively, one slice of whole wheat bread has about 13 grams carbs, and most adult males eat at least two.
And yes, he did not choose to go to army, he was required to go to army, so he is entitled to full breakfast, and has all rights to complain. I propose that you feel along with all our brothers in combat, and stop eating YOUR 5 star breakfast!

  6. in the army prison, they get meals that are even better than in yeshiva – that’s why they choose to go to prison rather than serve in the army

  7. Bread should be the least problematic.
I’d bet that all bread in the IDF is Kosher l’mehadrin.
    Can’t understand this at all.

  8. This was probably an unusual case of a traveling meal sent over from a store for a special situation. The picture looks like there is cottage cheese in the tray. The Israeli army does not any milchig products in any of their kitchens to avoid problems of kashrus. Every meal is pareve or fleishig. There is no milk on any bases. The IDF also has frum mashgichim in all bases – including the non-chareidi ones. (If it’s rice and not cottage cheese, then this is the carb the above commentators are looking for…)

  9. @cowardly lion, you hunger for carbs is dripping. This is a Nachal unit. They aren’t forced to go. So before you open your mouth, get the facts.
