Against the background of the mass Nakba event which is due to take place this Friday, 27 Kislev at the Haifa Cinematheque, Culture & Sports Minister Miri Regev turned to the Haifa Municipality to cancel the event and prevent its budget.
In response, Haifa Mayor Yona Yahav sent a letter to Sarah in which he refused to cancel the event. “This is not a festival that the Haifa municipality is giving him a platform, as you say, but an hour and a half event of a private non-profit organization.” Yahav also said that NIS 1 was not invested in public funds for the event. “It is not the role of the Haifa municipality to define any law-abiding organization and to identify those who violate the law. This role rests with the legal and judicial authorities of the State of Israel,” he added.
The “Remembering” organization, which has been operating since 2002 is sponsoring the event, seeking to bring Israel’s Jewish community to accept the ‘Nakba’ (Disaster), namely the establishment of the State of Israel.
