Many kollels are currently warning yeshiva students to maintain a full presence in the kollel and to take part in regular tefilos and sedarim due to the fact that this is the last month of the Gregorian year, a time during which there are many inspections by the Ministry of Education.
Notices explain that inspections have been reported in many a beis medrash already and avreichim must be present to avoid problems.
Some kollels have an information line and those who are registered, receive a phone call if and when inspectors arrive, instructing them to come immediately, without any delay.

Why aren’t the yungerleit there (where they should be) w/o a phone call telling them to “show up” so that the yeshiva doesn’t lose its per student funding allocations from the government?? These types of calls imply that the roshei yeshivot and administrators are perpetuating fraud to collect government funds for students who either aren’t really enrolled or are shteiging at their convenience and keep bankers’ hours.
a shandeh that someone you call an avreich has to be told to show up. sounds rather poor.
What a chillul Hashem. Why would they need to be reminded to come? They use the Kollel to get military exemptions and/or checks. Then they don’t really show up most of the time? The Torah is based on Emes, and this is pure sheker. Shameful.

Can u imagine if this same shtick was pulled off by some prestigious universities?
I’m not against Kollelim but this article makes no sense. If they are enrolled in Kollel, getting paid to learn in Kollel and being supported by their wives so they can learn in Kollel, why aren’t they in Kollel? Many Kollelim dock pay for absences, which is appropriate. It’s like a job (albeit low paying).
So sad. Why aren’t they in Kollel without the inspectors? If Torah is truly their occupation, they’re not at work! I’d love to have an info line to call me when my boss shows up telling me to get to work.
And then the kollelim ask for support from people because the govt cuts the stipends…..
The article was not so clear, but many people do not understand how the “signing up” system works.
There are many restrictions as far as number and age of avreichim as well as significant costs that prohibit smaller and most regular sized kollelim from being registered as an individual entity. As such, a group of kollelim in one area will usually register themselves together as one entity and share the responsibility or register as part of a large kollel nearby. THIS IS PERFECTLY LEGAL. When the inspectors show up they call to all the affiliated roshei kollel to bring their avreichim to the central beis midrash where the inspection is taking place.
Aw Israeli Chareidi — why did you have to tarnish a wonderful, truthful, comprehensive article on kolel avreidhim with some uncomfortable (for some) facts? I mean, who cares about the details about how the kolel registration system works in E.Y.? As long as the (false) impression is made that so many guys are not really learning. And you had to come and spoil all that!
You also broke the trend of the learned commenters who unanimously expressed their respect for lomdei Torah. Have a heart, man!
