Israeli aircraft and tanks struck a number of militant targets in the Gaza Strip on Thursday in response to a volley of mortar fire emanating from the Palestinian territory.
Officials in Gaza said three civilians were lightly wounded in one of the Israeli strikes.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the 12 mortar shells launched, which the Israeli military said targeted a military post near where a construction crew was working on “important security infrastructure” along the border. No one was injured on the Israeli side.
The tension comes a month after Israel detonated a terror tunnel leading from Gaza into its territory, killing 12 terrorists from the Iranian-backed Palestinian Islamic Jihad group and Hamas.
“The IDF sees this as a severe event and we know exactly who conducted this attack,” said IDF spokesman Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus. He said Islamic Jihad was behind the mortars but that Israel held Hamas responsible for any attacks emanating from Gaza.
In response to the mortar fire, the IDF said it attacked six terrorist military sites belonging to both Hamas and Islamic Jihad. Four of these positions were in northern Gaza and the other two were in northeastern Gaza.
We condemn mortars fired from Gaza. Palestinians in Gaza deserve to be rebuilding/living their lives/thriving – not being dragged into violence. Militant leaders are preventing the PA and world’s efforts to help the people of Gaza.
