Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked: No Mercy For Yigal Amir

Amid reports convicted Yitzchak Rabin assassin Yigal Amir will be seeking a retrial, Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked on Sunday morning Rosh Chodesh Kislev told Reshet Bet Radio he will remain in jail for the rest of his life.

Shaked explained that the president of the High Court of Justice must agree to grant him a retrial for it to take place and while she did not discuss the matter with her, she is confident Justice Esther Hayut will reject the request for a retrial.

Shaked added that Amir admitted to murdering Rabin and therefore, he must remain in prison for the remainder of his life.

  1. While all governments are ultimately run by people, there is a great difference between a nation ruled by laws and one ruled by men. Israel is supposedly a nation ruled by law and not the whims or emotions of people. Under a legal system that allows for a retrial, there are rules. If new evidence is found or serious problems uncovered with old evidence or a problem shown with the objectivity of the judge, there are usually grounds for a retrial. There is no room under the rule of law for an emotional factor. In the case of Yigal Amir, there is also a significant potion of the population that does not believe he is guilty and the whole business is a major conspiracy. So it would seem to me that if there are legal and compelling grounds for a retail, he should have one. Hopefully it would settle the minds, once and for all, of those who believe he is innocent.
