Many Israelis have not been concerned about drought as the nation’s water desalination plant has picked up much of the need for water which has not come by natural rainfall. In the interim, Israel has had four consecutive years of insufficient rainfall as the Kinneret continues to reach lower levels, soon in danger of the level being so low that the water will flip, become salted and the Kinneret ruined forever as a primary source of potable water.
While store shelves are filled with bottled water, in truth, the situation in Israel and the entire Mideast is quite serious, and water remains a major topic among experts in the region who area aware our natural resource appears to be drying up.
There have already been talks between state officials and farmers, with suggestions of cutting their water up to 50% this year being rejected by them. Most farmers maintain they are already being priced out of business and cutting water supplies will create an untenable situation. One longer term solution on the table is the construction of another desalination plant.
The experts have other solutions on the table including the construction of numerous smaller reservoirs, but for now, for the believers among us, tefilos to HKBH are the route being taken as clearly, HKBH can alleviate the drought condition this coming winter should He so decide. For now, persons in Israel should remain extremely water conscious as the precious natural resource is not available in limitless supply.
