VIDEOS: Police Commissioner Alsheich Calls To Probe Possible Police Brutality At Chareidi Protest

The National Police Headquarters held a ceremony on Monday morning 27 Elul with the participation of Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan, Police Commissioner Roni Alshich and Chief Rabbis of Israel Rishon L’Tzion Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef Shlita and Chief Rabbi of Israel Rabbi Dovid Lau Shlita.

During the ceremony, the police commissioner referred to a video that clearly shows police brutality during the demonstration of chareidim in Jerusalem on Sunday. “I felt very bad when I saw the videos of the violence in Jerusalem,” Alsheich said.

The police commissioner added that “the videos from the demonstration look very bad. I do not justify it, maybe there are policemen who should be tried. ”

According to him, “There was severe violence by the chareidim, and on the surface, it appears the use of force against them is unjustified.” Alshich added that “if it was possible to get out of this situation differently, if the policeman lost control, he would pay for it”.

While allegations of police brutality are commonplace following protests, this time is different as police were caught on a number of videos and according to participants, the violence by police was far more serious than the norm.

During the Monday morning ceremony Rabbi Lau added “Last night police had an irregularity in their conduct, and this does not characterize the police and everyone should remember that ‘man was made in the image of G-d.’

“Despite the exception to the police yesterday, this does not characterize the police and all the policemen. It is clear that the way is to honor each and every one of us, as we were excited a week ago to see the policewoman serving water to the disabled demonstrator.

Public Security Minister Erdan spoke of the heavy responsibility maintained by police and at times, they operate under the most difficult of conditions. Erdan however echoed the police commissioner, that the video and other evidence is being reviewed and anyone who used unjustifiable force will be dealt with properly. He emphasized a policeman may and must use force at times in the fulfillment of his role, but there are limits.

“…And so we have to admit, yesterday we saw some of the cases documented in the chareidi demonstrations in Jerusalem, and I was so happy that the Chief Rabbi said that this detail does not speak for all, but these cases require an in-depth examination. The police commissioner immediately announced the need for an evaluation. ”
