Speaking to members of the press while visiting the Bakum induction base on Tuesday, IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Benny Gantz explained that while serving in the IDF is a law, he feels it is more of a privilege.

When pushed to response on the issue of chareidim and the draft just hours before the Tal Law expires at midnight, the IDF commander explained that for him, he acts upon the decisions of the lawmakers and whatever the government instructs the IDF to do will become the policy.

Interestingly, in his address to new recruits enlisting, the IDF’s commander opted to speak to them about the dangers and prohibition of drinking in the IDF, telling them the IDF is “not a weekend party” and there is zero tolerance for alcohol. He explained to them that “there is a mission to defend the country and there are sufficient problems”, warming them to remain far away from alcohol.
