Israel: Tomato Shortage Expected In Tishrei – Dairy/Meat Industries Predict Sufficient Supplies Will Be Available

Ministry of Agriculture officials are expecting a shortage of tomatoes around the Tishrei Yomim Tovim. The finding is part of the ministry’s preparation for Tishrei, adding there are no shortages expected regarding other vegetables, fruits, fresh meats and poultry.

Regarding tomatoes, it appears there will be a shortage of 20% due to the unseasonably hot weather.

The dairy industry reports that despite the unusually hot summer, which resulted in about 4kg less milk per cow per day, there is no shortage expected regarding dairy products.

The demand for eggs increases significantly in Tishrei, and this industry is also preparing, working to supply sufficient supply, however no shortage is anticipated. Government officials have put a cap on egg imports during Tishrei at 30 million, after which taxes will have to be paid. Eggs are imported from Spain, Portugal and Italy.

Egg industry officials do predict on the Sunday, following the three-day Rosh Hashanah weekend, there may be a shortage of eggs in some areas as fresh eggs will only begin arriving towards Sunday night.

  1. And soon we’ll be hearing about the bad esrog crop this year due to the hot weather. And probably also the lulavim are burned due to excessive exposure to heat. And maybe also hadassim. It’s the same song & dance every erev yomtov. Just the specific product changes from year to year. One time it’s eggs, another it’s chicken, and another it’s tomatoes. It’s a way of jacking up prices. Welcome to Israel.
