Rav Mazuz: I Am Not The Posek Hador

HaGaon HaRav Meir Mazuz Shlita, Rosh Yeshivas Kisei Rachamim addressed his shiurim that are aired on Kol Berama Radio. In a recent shiur, the rav addressed questions that some disagree with his rulings and do not follow his viewpoint.

“I am not the posek hador. I am nothing, a nobody and therefore, one can follow who one wishes. One is not compelled to listen to my words. I am certain of the correctness of my position but one is not compelled to accept what I say for I am a none” stated the rav in response.

There is much division in the Sephardi community since the petira of HaGaon HaRav Ovadia Yosef ZT”L . Rav Mazuz backs Eli Yishai, who broke away from Shas after Aryeh Deri returned as party leader. This has also resulted in a boycott of Shas and its affiliates of Kol Berama Radio, which is affiliated with Yishai, Rav Mazuz and their supporters. The division is such that Rishon L’Tzion Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef Shlita has prohibited Kol Berama to air his weekly motzei Shabbos shiurim, clearly mixing in his position as Rishon L’Tzion with his Shas-related political position against Yishai and his associates.

  1. Of all the Sfardi rabbonim in Israel, Rav Mazuz was always one of my favorites. What he says only confirms my appreciation of him as a special rav.

  2. To be sure, Rav Mazuz might not be the “posek hador” even for the Sephardim, but he is very far from being a “nobody,” chas ve’shalom. He is a renown tzaddik and Rosh Yeshiva who has many talmidim and a sizeable following even outside his yeshiva. His remarks cited in the article reinforce his reputation for anivus, along with his gadlus be’Torah.
(Rabbi) Eli Yishai is a wonderful fellow who currently has no political “footprint,” or presence. The split with Shas is truly unfortunate, but in the current political climate, he may not be able to pass the minimum voter threshold required gain any representation at all in the knesset. This was clearly demonstrated in the last knesset elections.
Part of the sad outcome of machlokes.
