Outgoing Vice President of the High Court of Justice Elyakim Rubinstein on Wednesday, 18 Tammuz, accepted the request from Interior Minister Aryeh Deri to hold another hearing on the matter of the opening of stores in Tel Aviv on Shabbos.
At the beginning of the decision, Rubenstein wrote: “I decided to grant another hearing in the High Court decision in a panel to be determined by the president”. Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit authorized Deri to submit his request for another hearing, a position that contradicts the state’s position.
Included in his response, Rubinstein writes, “The issue is the nature of Shabbos in Israeli society, a most important matter which justifies additional examination…” Rubinstein did not state how soon the hearing will appear on the court’s docket.
